Anna Kaye Artist Statement:

Fire is a part of our forest’s vitality. It promotes species diversity, regeneration of seeds and plants, and prevents the spread of diseases. This phenomenon has shaped our landscapes since the appearance of terrestrial plants, over 400 million year ago. Cycles of loss and renewal, such as wildfire, have become even more emphasized as all of us experience the current pandemic and global warming. My art explores the hope, resilience, and regeneration that occurs as a result of these intense alterations. With my drawings, paintings, and video, I remember the forgotten and reveal the hidden. I grew up near Detroit, Michigan where vast urban decay was rampant from de-industrialization, crime, and other factors. This enhanced my sense of compassion, love for diversity and justice, and reverence for the natural world. Perceiving life with empathy compels me to capture its inherent features, “imperfections,” and all. Every angle, tiny detail, value, or hue are important parts of the whole. On our 4.5 billion year-old revolving planet change is ever-present and at times accelerated by the species that inhabit it. With change comes loss and adaptation. My artwork documents this dichotomy, its ecological and social impact, offering a visual language to assist in coping with these transformations.
